'Sleight:' Flick Tutors on How to Be Self-Employed in College

By Joel Brown on June 6, 2017

First things first, research about accelerated learning indicates that acquisition and retention are enhanced when multiple bits of intelligence are activated when meaningful metaphorical content is employed during the learning process.

Linguistic, Visual-Spatial, Logical, Kinesthetic, Musical, Interpersonal, and Intrapsychic Intelligence are the seven types of intelligence that people are likely to engage in through a movie.

A glimpse into becoming self-employed from the reel life

So let’s look at what the movie, ‘Sleight‘ is about:

“A young street magician is left to care for his little sister after their parents’ passing and turns to illegal activities to keep a roof over their heads. When he gets in too deep, his sister is kidnapped and he is forced to use his magic and brilliant mind to save her” (qtd. Trailers app).

Watch the Trailer of ‘Sleight’

We see that the character’s name is Bo, showing the character strengths/virtues of wisdom/knowledge: creativity, curiosity, judgment, love of learning; courage: bravery, perseverance, zest; humanity: love, kindness, social intelligence; justice: leadership; temperance: prudence, self-regulation; and transcendence: appreciation of beauty and  excellence, hope, and humor.

Go deeper into the character of Bo

Bo wants a job to take responsibility for his actions in caring for his little sister, and if he doesn’t get it now Bo risks losing his sister. So it seems like Bo will get what he wants, by using his love of learning, creativity, and courage to promote, entice, baffle, amaze, and help in doing magic.

In contrast, Bo must overcome his grief with his parents’ passing, and responsibilities in being forced into adulthood at a young age and settling matters with his sister’s kidnappers.

Applying what we’ve learned to our own real life

Now we can take what we’ve learned from seeing Bo’s good behavior with his positive character strengths that he displayed, and use it in our own life to create a job for ourselves by using whatever it is that we have in our hands.

Furthermore, the tagline for the movie is, “You can change the cards you’re dealt;” now let’s apply this to the college student who maybe has a hard time finding a job or getting hired because of a bad track record due to there being inconsistencies with jobs.

Maybe there’s been a lot of bouncing around from job to job and hardly any stable jobs. So instead of working 2-3 jobs to go to school full-time, why not be your own boss and get paid for doing what you love to do while in college instead of waiting until after?

Well through this movie we can see how a hustler went from doing negative jobs, gaining street knowledge, and becoming business wise to embark on a new positive outlet (magic) that opened up a door for him to have a positive job.

It goes to show you that in your hands you have something that only you can do that no one else can and sometimes all that one needs to do is to be awake to that thing or gift so you can believe that you are able to do it before developing and mastering it. Therefore, the miracle is in your hands to change the life that you were dealt.
